Alum Rock Park is California's oldest municipal park and a mountain biking gem hidden in the hills of east San Jose. With its network of dirt trails through beautiful oak woodland, challenging hillside climbs, and stunning ridge views, it's a favorite among local mountain bikers looking for a quick escape into nature without leaving the city.
Park Overview
Alum Rock Park encompasses 718 acres in the Diablo Range foothills of east San Jose. The park features a variety of trails ranging from gentle creekside paths to steep, technical hillside climbs. The main road through the park is paved and closed to cars, making it a safe warm-up or family-friendly option. The real mountain biking begins on the dirt trails that branch off from the main road.
Trail Options
Creekside Trail: A relatively flat dirt trail that follows Penitencia Creek through the park. Great for beginners and warm-ups.
North Rim Trail: A moderate to difficult trail that climbs the north side of the park with switchbacks and technical sections. Offers excellent views of the park and South Bay.
South Rim Trail: Similar to the North Rim but on the south side, with steep climbs and technical descents. Best for experienced riders.
Live Oak Trail: A moderate trail through oak woodland with some climbing but less technical than the rim trails.
What to Expect
- Surface: Dirt trails with rocks, roots, and some loose sections
- Elevation: Trails climb from the creek (around 400 feet) to the ridges (over 1,000 feet)
- Difficulty: Ranges from easy creekside to expert rim trails
- Best time: Fall through spring when trails are dry but not dusty
- Facilities: Restrooms, parking, and picnic areas at the park entrance
Riding Tips
Start with the creekside trail to warm up before tackling the climbs. The rim trails are steep and technical — make sure you have the skills and fitness before attempting them. Watch for hikers and equestrians on shared trails, and always yield to other users.
Bring plenty of water — there's no water on the trails once you leave the main park area. The exposed ridge trails can be hot in summer, so plan accordingly.
Check trail conditions before heading out. Trails can be closed after rain, and the park itself may close during extreme weather or fire danger.
Getting There
Alum Rock Park is located at the end of Alum Rock Avenue in east San Jose. The park entrance has a large parking area, and you can ride your bike from various parts of San Jose via the Penitencia Creek Trail, which connects to the park.
